There aren’t a lot of rock bands that can routinely be cited as being the greatest rock band in the world. While opinions will always vary from person to person, it’s commonly accepted that it doesn’t get much better than Led Zeppelin. The four-piece band fused blues with hard driving rock to become legends in the musical world. Despite their fame, the group has yet to have an official documentary made about them. Over the last several years, a film has been in the works and will be coming to IMAX next year.
The three surviving members of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and Jimmy Page have all set down for interviews for director Bernard McMahon‘s upcoming film, “Becoming Led Zeppelin.” The movie is a combination documentary and concert film and chronicles the band’s early years and rise to fame. Along with the interviews with the aforementioned band members, a lot of concert footage has been unearthed that hasn’t been seen before. Most of the concerts are from Led Zeppelin’s early years touring America and are accompanied by commentary from the group and a previously unreleased interview with drummer John Bonham, who passed away in 1980.
“We spent five years flying back and forth across the Atlantic scouring attics and basements in pursuit of rare and unseen film footage, photographs and music recordings,” writer-producer Allison McGourty said. Zeppelin fans know the band has a few previous concert film releases including “The Song Remains the Same,” “How the West Was Won,” “Celebration Day,” and the fittingly titled “Led Zeppelin DVD.”
Following Bonham’s death, Zeppelin disbanded. Page and Plant continued to engage in other projects including The Honeydrippers, and their self-titled Page and Plant tour and album. (Page, Plant, and Jones formally reunited as Led Zeppelin in 2007 with Jason Bonham on drums for a one-night only performance.)
“Becoming Led Zeppelin” will release exclusively to IMAX on February 7th, 2025.
