New 2025 4Runner: What You WON’T Find on the Fact Sheet

The all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner has arrived—well, almost. This sixth-generation icon hasn’t hit dealership lots yet, but it’s already creating a buzz in the automotive world. Toyota’s innovative approach to pre-launch development and its partnership with the aftermarket industry make this release especially intriguing. Here’s a look at what you won’t find on the fact sheet but should know about the 2025 4Runner.

Behind the Scenes at SEMA Garage

Recently, Toyota hosted a special event at the SEMA Garage in Diamond Bar, California, where select pre-production 2025 4Runner models were showcased. These units—including a red Limited trim, a silver TRD Off-Road, a white TRD Pro, and a Trailhunter in the stunning Everest color—were designated as test and development vehicles. Toyota and aftermarket companies used this event to measure and analyze the new 4Runner for product development. The response from the aftermarket community was overwhelming, with attendance exceeding capacity.

What Makes the New 4Runner Stand Out?

    1. Blend of Old and New:

Toyota’s design team aimed to capture the heritage of earlier 4Runner generations while integrating modern features. For instance, the wrap-around rear quarter panel windows pay homage to the second generation but with a contemporary twist.

    2. Gas and Hybrid Configurations:

For the first time, the 4Runner offers both gas and hybrid powertrains. While the gas model maintains a flat cargo area when the seats are folded, the hybrid configuration’s battery placement introduces dimensional differences that could affect camping setups.

    3. Larger Stock Tires and Room for More:

The 4Runner comes equipped with Michelin LTX Trail tires (265/70R18), which are slightly larger than the previous generation’s stock tires. Toyota engineers and aftermarket companies confirmed that 35-inch tires could potentially fit with minimal modifications.

    4. Off-Road Innovations:

Stabilizer Bar Disconnect: A new feature for enhanced trail capability, offering improved articulation and control.

Fox Shocks with Protective Armor: Found on select trims like the TRD Pro, these shocks include armored canisters for added durability.

Trailhunter Skid Plate: Compared to the TRD Pro’s skid plate, this one is longer and thinner, providing more coverage for the transmission.

    Pre-Production Quirks

While the vehicles on display were pre-production models, they offered valuable insights:

Unfinished Mirror Caps: Likely due to their pre-production status, these caps might not make it to the final design.

No Hood Struts: A surprise omission, but aftermarket companies are already gearing up to fill this gap.

Easter Eggs: Sharp-eyed observers found fun details like hidden emblems on the headlights.

    Inside the New 4Runner

The interior of the 2025 4Runner is designed with practicality in mind:

Flat-Folding Seats: Essential for campers, the gas model’s rear seats fold flat for a more convenient cargo space.

Enhanced Storage: Features like integrated LED lighting, AC outlets, and storage pockets are standard.

Full-Size Spare Tire: Unlike the Tacoma’s donut spare, the 4Runner includes a full-size spare for better off-road readiness.

    Aftermarket Frenzy

The SEMA Garage event underscored the importance of the 4Runner in the aftermarket world. Companies are already developing bolt-on accessories, including roof racks, bumpers, and MOLLE panels. With such early access, these businesses aim to be first to market, ensuring their products are ready when the 4Runner officially launches.

    Engineering Insights

Toyota’s meticulous engineering was evident in details like:

Variable Bump Stops: Designed to enhance shock absorption and prevent bottoming out on rough trails.

Diverse Exhaust Systems: Different trims feature unique exhaust designs, tailored for performance and sound.

TRD Air Filter: A cone-style TRD air filter provides better performance than traditional flat filters.

    A Trailblazer for the Future

The 2025 Toyota 4Runner is more than just an SUV; it’s a platform for adventure and innovation. Its thoughtful design, robust off-road features, and the collaboration with the aftermarket industry ensure it’s ready to meet the needs of both enthusiasts and everyday drivers. Keep an eye out—this vehicle is set to make waves when it officially hits the market.
