The Marlon Brando (“The Godfather”) biopic “Waltzing with Brando” just got its first trailer, and we don’t think it’s what anyone was expecting. The film is written and directed by Bill Fishman (“My Dinner with Jimi”), and stars Billy Zane (“The Boys”) as the late acting legend.

The trailer for “Waltzing with Brando” opens on filming a scene from “The Godfather,” but quickly reveals its true focus. While the movie is framed around his acting in Francis Ford Coppola‘s iconic film and “Last Tango in Paris,” the plot will center around Brando’s environmental activism.

In the 1970s Brando attempted to create a self-sustaining environment on the secluded Tahitian island of Tetiaroa. The upcoming film is based on the memoir of the same name by the late Bernard Judge. Judge worked as an architect on the project and is played by Jon Heder (“Tremors: Shrieker Island”).

The cast also includes Richard Dreyfuss, Rob Corddry, Camille Razat, Tia Carrere, and Alaina Huffman.

While most films like this would dive behind the scenes and dissect Brando’s countless iconic roles. “Waltzing with Brando” seeks to be a light hearted look at all the chaos around building an island from the ground up. (Like Fyre Fest would have been if the organizers cared about pesky things like regulations, safety, and sustainability.)

The film is “a love letter to Tahiti, and him and his passion,” Zane said. “Back then no one would touch causes. He championed civil rights, he marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. He walked the walk for civil rights; he did it for Indigenous rights. What no one knows about is what he did for the environment as an activist and the foresight he had on what in fact would [become] a climate crisis.”

“Waltzing with Brando” is produced by Fishman, Zane, and Dean Bloxom.

It will make its debut at the Torino Film Festival and is expected to have a wide release sometime next year. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the film as it develops. You can check out the first trailer below:
