What is Hard Disk 3F0 Error?

Hard Disk 3F0 Error indicates that the computer’s BIOS or UEFI is unable to locate the hard drive containing the OS.

This issue is commonly found in HP computers but can also occur on other systems.

    • Incorrect BIOS boot sequence
    • Hard drive connection issues
    • Corrupted boot files
    • Failing hard drive

How to Fix Boot Device Not Found 3F0 Error?

First of all, look for physical damage and loose connections and try performing a hard reset. If that doesn’t fix boot device not found error on your device then follow the upcoming solutions:

Solution 1: Reset BIOS Settings to Default

Improper BIOS settings can cause the Hard Disk 3F0 error. Enter your device’s BIOS and restore the default settings to see if the error is resolved.

    • Turn off your computer and wait for 5 Seconds.
    • Press the power buttons to restart the computer and press the bios key (varies by manufacturer)
    • Once the BIOS screen appears, press F9 to Reset BIOS Settings to default
    • Press F10 to save the changes and exit BIOS.

Follow the prompt and restart your computer. If it starts up normally, the issue is resolved. If not, try the next solution.

    Solution 2:  Run Hardware Diagnostics

Diagnose the hardware components using the diagnostic tools to verify the faulty hard drive, you can choose the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool or third-party tools to do so:

We recommend you go with the manufacturer’s diagnostic tool, Here is how to run the hardware diagnostics tool on an HP computer:

    • Start the PC and press Esc.
    • Press F2 to redirect to the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
    • In the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics menu: Click on Component Test, select Hard Drive, Quick Test, and choose Run Once.
Also:  For computers with multiple hard drives: select Test All Hard Drives
    • Once the test is completed, the results are displayed on the screen and test logs.
    • If the hard drive passes the test and the issue isn’t fixed, run an extensive test.
    •  In case of failure on one of the tests, note the failure ID (24-digit code) and contact HP customer support.

Solution 3: Rebuild the Boot Configuration

Try the steps mentioned below for your hard drive partition type:

    For MBR Partitioned Drives:

    • Boot your device and press F8 to open Windows Recovery.
    • Go to Advanced, choose Command Prompt, and type the following commands:

    bootrec /RebuildBcd

    bootrec /fixMbr

    bootrec /fixboot

    Exit

    • Now try rebooting your computer.

    For GPT Partitioned Drives:

Create a Windows installation media, connect it to your computer, and follow the steps below:

    • Enter your BIOS/UEFI settings (using F2, F10, F12, or Delete during startup)
    • Set USB as primary boot device.
    • In the Windows Setup screen, select language, time, and keyboard preferences and click Next
    • Click Repair your computer at the bottom left.
    • Choose Troubleshoot, Advanced options, and opt for Command Prompt and enter the following commands:

    diskpart

    list disk

select disk 0 (or the disk with your OS)

    list volume

    • Now find the partition with a FAT32 file system (usually around 100-200MB) and note the volume number and assign a drive letter to the EFI partition.

select volume X (replace X with the volume number)

assign letter=Z: (or any available letter)

    Exit

    • Type the below command to rebuild the BCD

bcdboot C:\Windows /s Z: /f UEFI (Replace C:\Windows, if Windows is installed on a different drive)

    • Check and repair the BCD

    bootrec /fixboot

    bootrec /rebuildbcd

    • Finally, Remove the Windows Installation media and reboot your computer.

    Solution 4: Reinstall Windows

If none of the above solutions resolved the Hard Disk 3F0 error, reinstalling Windows is your last option. This is a more drastic measure, as it is time-consuming and will erase all data.

Important: Ensure that you back up important data from the hard drive before proceeding and keep your device connected to a stable power source before proceeding.

    Conclusion

These are a few viable DIY solutions to fix the Hard Disk 3F0 error. In case of failure or a dead hard drive, confirm the status, recover the data using a professional data recovery tool, and replace it with a new hard drive.
