    The complexities of international SEO

International SEO is the best way to take your business to the next level, but it’s also a complex and time-consuming process.

When your international SEO strategy is successful, it will put your business in front of a whole new audience; usually in a different country or who speaks a different language – whichever you have decided to target.

Understanding SEO principles is an ongoing process as Google is constantly improving its algorithm to provide its users with a better experience. Couple this with the intricacies of targeting an audience in a different country, who use a different language and potentially different search methods – you begin to scratch the surface of the complexities of international SEO.

    How does international SEO work?

International SEO increases the number of people visiting your website by implementing tactics that put your website at the top of the search results for the countries you choose to target.

Start by understanding your audience (and your competitors)

When you’re considering an international SEO strategy, think about whether you’ve got an existing international audience you can tap into – if you’re already performing reasonably well in another country or region, capitalize on that momentum by focusing your international SEO there.

Although Google is a behemoth, there are plenty of other ways that people around the world search for things – in China for example, Baidu is the most commonly used search engine. An international SEO strategy needs to consider the way that it’s target audience searches for things online.

    Then analyze your competitors

At the same time, do some competitor research in the area you’d like to target. Perhaps you’ve seen a similar brand do well in a different country, and you think your product could compete. If it’s a relatively uncrowded market, your international SEO strategy could put you at the top of the rankings and help you grow in that area.

On the other hand, if you notice there’s a gap in an international market – where none of your competitors are playing then you can monopolize that market with a strong international SEO strategy.

Your international SEO strategy should be tailored to your target customers

A well-designed website will help you rank in Google’s search results, but it’s also important to let the algorithm know which languages and regions you’re targeting. You can do this using up-to-date HREFLANG codes and a URL structure that reflects your target audience – this may be subdomains or a Country Code Top Level Domain (ccTLDs).

It’s also essential to create content in the local language of the area you’re targeting; you need useful content that’s written by native speakers.

Sometimes it pays to get expert advice

International SEO is complex and there’s no point cutting corners – the algorithm is constantly updating to provide users with the best results it can. This means that it will penalize you if your website is engaging in spammy SEO to improve your rankings.
