Killing Cockatrice in Old School RuneScape is one of the first steps on your Slayer leveling journey. You might want to gain a comprehensive understanding of tackling Cockatrices and every aspect, from general information and requirements to the nitty-gritty of gearing up with the right equipment for different combat styles. Whether you’re a seasoned player looking to refine your strategy or a newcomer eager to embark on slayer tasks, the knowledge needed to efficiently and effectively slay Cockatrices is as helpful as OSRS gold for progressing your account.

    General Info

Cockatrices reside in the dank and dark corners of the Rellekka Slayer dungeon. These monsters are known for their petrifying gaze, which can turn the unprepared adventurer into stone. Thus, facing them is not just a matter of swinging your sword but also about safeguarding yourself against their lethal stare, regardless of your level.

    Requirements

To engage in combat with a Cockatrice, you must have a Slayer level of at least 25. This prerequisite ensures that only those who honed their combat skills and knowledge of slayer monsters can take on these creatures. Additionally, to protect yourself from their petrifying gaze, you must use a mirror shield or any variant that offers similar protection.

    Restricted Gear

When preparing for battle against Cockatrices, it’s crucial to remember that certain gear is non-negotiable. The most important piece of equipment is the mirror shield or its equivalents. Without this, players risk being hit with a stat-draining effect that can quickly turn the tide of battle against them. Hence, while you might prioritize offensive gear, ensuring your defense against their gaze is paramount.

How to Get A Mirror Shield

Securing a mirror shield is a critical step in your preparation. This shield can be purchased from any Slayer Master for a modest sum of coins. Before you can wield this shield, ensure you meet the requirement of at least 20 Defence. This shield does not just serve as a piece of armour but is your primary defense mechanism against the Cockatrice’s deadly gaze, making it an indispensable part of your gear.

    Relevant Drops

Cockatrices are known for their generous loot table, which includes medium clue scrolls, limpwurt roots, and various runes. Among these, the medium clue scrolls are particularly sought after by treasure hunters. Moreover, Cockatrices are the exclusive source of mystic boots (light), making them a key target for collectors aiming to complete their mystic sets.

    Medium Clues

Medium clue scrolls allow adventurers to embark on treasure trails that lead to valuable rewards. With their relatively high drop rate for these scrolls, Cockatrices serve as an excellent source for players looking to engage in these rewarding quests.

    Mystic Boots (Light)

For those dedicated to completing their collection log, slaying Cockatrices is necessary. These creatures are the sole providers of mystic boots (light), a rare and valuable item that is a gem in any collector’s log. These boots offer substantial magical defense and serve as a status symbol among the OSRS community.

Unique Location and How to Get There

Cockatrices reside in the Fremennik Slayer Dungeon, a cavernous labyrinth located south of Rellekka. Players can easily access this location using the Fairy Ring network (code AJR) or running from the nearby Seers’ Village. Once inside the dungeon, navigate through the winding passages to find the Cockatrices lurking.

    Equipment for Range

When preparing for a ranged assault on Cockatrices, your choice of equipment should enhance your accuracy and ability to sustain damage over time. Opt for the highest tier of dragonhide armour you can wear, as it provides excellent defense against the Cockatrice’s attacks while boosting your ranged accuracy. The Magic Shortbow is a popular choice due to its rapid-fire rate and special attack that allows for two shots at once, significantly increasing your DPS. Ammunition choice is critical; Amethyst arrows offer a good balance between cost and damage, but if your budget allows, opting for Rune arrows can further enhance your damage output. Additionally, consider using Ava’s device to retrieve your arrows, minimizing the cost per kill.

    Equipment for Melee

For Melee, you should prioritize gear that maximizes attack and defensive stats. Wearing the best platebody and platelegs or plateskirt you can afford, such as Adamant, Rune, or Dragon, will significantly increase your survivability. The choice of weapon is crucial; the Abyssal whip, with its high attack speed and strength bonus, is ideal for those who can wield it.

Alternatively, the Dragon Scimitar offers speed and damage for those who still need to unlock the whip. Incorporating a defender, like the Dragon defender, can significantly boost your offensive capabilities while also providing a modest defensive bonus. Remember to wear your mirror shield in the shield slot to protect against the Cockatrice’s gaze, as neglecting this will severely hamper your effectiveness. If you don’t have your OSRS fire cape yet, the Obsidian cape or Ardougne cape are good alternatives.

    Equipment for Magic

Wearing gear that maximizes magical accuracy and damage is vital for mages aiming to take down Cockatrices. The Mystic set is a solid choice for those on a budget, offering a respectable boost to magic attacks without breaking the bank.

For higher-level mages, the Ahrim’s set from the Barrows minigame significantly increases magic strength, making your spells even more deadly. Your weapon should ideally be a staff that complements your chosen spellbook; for example, the Staff of Air can eliminate the rune cost for air spells, making your attacks more cost-efficient. Considering the cost of runes, choosing spells within your budget that offer a high damage-per-cast ratio is crucial. While the

Slayer’s Staff (e) can be used to cast Slayer Dart at a reduced rune cost; those with access to higher-level spells and equipment might prefer the Trident of the Seas or Swamp for its faster casting speed and higher damage output. Remember, while focusing on maximizing your magical prowess, the mirror shield remains an indispensable part of your equipment to guard against the Cockatrice’s lethal gaze.

    Final Considerations

Mastering the art of slaying Cockatrices in OSRS is a journey that blends the thrill of combat with the satisfaction of obtaining unique treasures and contributing to your collection log. With the proper preparation, equipment, and knowledge, you can turn these petrifying creatures into a source of valuable drops and experience.
