Spielberg, Scorsese Developing “Cape Fear” Series for Apple TV+

A new collaboration between Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg is on the horizon. The pair are reportedly developing “Cape Fear” series for Apple TV+. They will executive produce the project, which will be based on the 1962 and 1991 Universal movies of the same name. Scorsese directed the 1991 film, which was made under Spielberg‘s Amblin Entertainment. They will be on the project headed by creator, executive producer and showrunner Nick Antosca (“The Act“), Amblin Television (Spielberg’s label) and UCP, a division of Universal Studio Group. When this was being talked about last year it wasn’t clear on which streaming platform would be getting the series but it’s now firmly in the hands of Apple TV+.

“Cape Fear” was one of the bigger hits in 1991, bringing in $182.3 million at the box office. The psychological thriller was a remake of the original 1962 film, based off the 1957 novel “The Executioners” by John D. MacDonald. In the ’91 iteration, stars like Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Joe Don Baker, and Juliette Lewis were on cast. So far there’s no word if De Niro will be involved in anyway for this new series.

The story toes the line of good and evil, or really getting revenge when you’ve been wronged. “When attorney Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) knowingly withholds evidence that would acquit violent sex offender Max Cady (Robert De Niro) of rape charges, Max spends 14 years in prison,” the 1991 version’s synopsis reads. “But after Max’s release, knowing about Sam’s deceit, he devotes his life to stalking and destroying the Bowden family. When practical attempts to stop Max fail, Sam realizes that he must act outside the law to protect his wife and daughter.”

A series could be a unique take. Where only the husband was a lawyer it’s now said that a husband and wife will be equally invested in what’s happening as they are both attorneys. According to Deadline, the “Cape Fear” series will be a tense, contemporary thriller. One that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century. And in it, a troublesome time is coming for a pair of married attorneys when an infamous killer from their past gets released after years in prison.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other projects.
