It’s a good year for fans of post-apocalyptic fare. We’ve got the “Fallout” series coming on Prime Video, a new George Miller “Mad Max” film with “Furiosa,” and one other major release set in a dystopian future. After yesterday’s first look at Eli Roth‘s upcoming “Borderlands” movie, here comes the official trailer!
The Gearbox Games video game franchise has been a fan-favorite every since launching in 2009, and the excitement of the company’s CEO Randy Pitchford for Roth’s film has been infectious.
The film stars Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Jack Black as Claptrap, Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis, Kevin Hart as “Borderlands 2” character Roland (described as a skilled ex-soldier turned mercenary), Florian “Big Nasty” Munteanu as Krieg, and Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina.
Official Synopsis-
“Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. Based on one of the best-selling videogame franchises of all time, welcome to BORDERLANDS.”
Roth directs from a script by Craig Mazin (“Chernobyl,” “The Last of Us“) the Lionsgate release. We do know that Pitchford confirmed this film would NOT be “identical” to the existing in-game universe, which is interesting. He’s been teasing all kinds of BTS goodies, and promises lots of easter eggs for fans. (He even did a trailer breakdown with IGN, which you can watch here.)
“Borderlands” is coming soon, but also dated August 9th, 2024 (according to the official press releases sent out yesterday). You can check out the trailer now:
