Prime Video’s upcoming animated “The Wheel of Time” spinoff feature film “The White Tower” has named their director. Based on the late Robert Jordan’s book series “The Wheel Of Time” (which was later completed by Brandon Sanderson), the project will be set before the events in Jordan’s 14 novels, and the Amazon/Sony TV series.  Jay Oliva (“The Dark Knight Returns”) will be directing.

“The White Tower” is a young adult action-adventure film, that tells the story of a girl with a magical gift. Her life is forever changed by an evil that visits her remote mountain village. She finds herself alone in a dangerous world, where she must journey to The White Tower to learn how to use her powers. These special abilities are the only hope to save her family and friends. Rebellious and mistrusting, she learns that there is something in this world that is just as powerful a weapon against evil as magic.

“I am so excited to be joining this amazing creative team,” Oliva said. “Reading Robert Jordan’s ‘The Wheel of Time’ inspired me to become a filmmaker, and having an opportunity to explore the world he created has been a lifelong dream of mine.”

“The rich history of The White Tower has intrigued me, and the expansive backstory of the books gives the creative team the freedom to tell a fresh and imaginative story within the familiar world that was so meticulously crafted by Jordan in The Wheel of Time,” he added.

While this film has been in the development stage for a while, the script is still written by Zack Stentz (“Thor”). Production aims to finally start in 2024, with Quebec’s Squeeze Animation Studios providing production services. Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon of iwot are producing along with Electric Brain Entertainment. Selvage and Mondragon are also executive producers on “The Wheel of Time” TV series.

“With the addition of Jay, his vision and his experience in world building, the White Tower team is complete and positioned to deliver our collective vision of an animated feature film that is unique, powerful and entertaining,” Selvage said.

Seasons 1 and 2 of “The Wheel of Time” are currently streaming on Prime Video. Season 3 is currently in production. We’ll keep you posted on updates about “The White Tower” as they become available.
