Paramount Pictures acquisitions label, Republic Pictures, has gotten the North American rights to the action-horror movie “Azrael.” The new film stars Samara Weaving (“The Babysitter”) and comes courtesy of the C2 Motion Picture Group.
“Azrael” takes place in a world where no one speaks and centers around a devout, female-led community that hunts down a young woman. After the self-titled character (Weaving) escapes her imprisonment. Once she is recaptured by the ruthless leaders, she will be a sacrifice to pacify an ancient evil that resides deep within the surrounding wilderness. But, in true action-horror fashion, she will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival.
The creators describe “Azrael” as a “relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, and it unfolds in real time.”
While Weaving is no stranger to horror, that’s not where “Azrael”’s connections with the genre end. The feature is directed by E.L. Katz, who has also helmed episodes of Netflix’s “Haunting of Bly Manor” and SyFy’s “Channel Zero.” The script is written by Simon Barrett, who also penned “The Guest” and “You’re Next.”
Jason Cloth (“JokerI”) and Katrin Kissa (“November”) will executive produce the upcoming film.
While, no distribution plans have been revealed just yet, there is hope for a theatrical release. We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Azrael” as they become available.
