1992’s “Basic Instinct” changed the landscape of movie thrillers. A femme fatale had never been so confident, nor so dangerous. This can easily be attributed to Sharon Stone‘s performance as Catherine Tramell. Paul Verhoeven‘s direction and Joe Eszterhas writing made the erotic thriller a controversial hit. Now more of a cult classic, there are those in the media landscape that feel there’s more to tell.

Sumerian Comics is releasing a “Basic Instinct” comic series. Illustrated by Cuban great Vanesa R. Del Rey, the series takes inspiration from the film while being a continuance of the story of Catherine Tramell.

Apparently this comic series will follow an anonymous artist whose exhibits are themed around serial killers. With the “Icepick Murders” being their most recent project. Soon the art director of the exhibit becomes embroiled in a murder mystery when the security guard for the exhibit is killed on opening night. He’s thrust into a psychological thriller, with an investigation that will make him question everything.

For this comic series, Del Rey will be accompanied by colorist Keyla Valerio and writer Sam Freeman, as well as a number of talented artists designing the covers. It’s surprising there’s suddenly the interest to continue the story through graphic novels. But we can’t deny it definitely has us curious as to where they’ll be taking the story.
“Basic Instinct” the comic series will release November 1st, 2023. Sumerian acquired the adaptations from StudioCanal through Creative Licensing Corporation.
