According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the average American home wastes more than 9,000 gallons of water each year. That works out to be about 180 gallons of water each week.

Studies have also shown that American homes waste a whole lot of energy, too. Up to one-third of the residential energy produced in this country ends up going to waste.

So, what can you do to save a lot of water and energy from now on? There are actually quite a few steps you can take to start saving water and putting better energy conservation practices into place. They’ll make it possible for you to begin living sustainably from now on.

If you’d like to make your house more eco-friendly by going green, keep reading to see what you can do to save a lot of water and energy as you move forward.

How to Save a Lot of Water in Your Home

There are a bunch of ways in which you’re probably wasting water in your home right now without even realizing it. By making a few simple adjustments to the way you live, you can stop wasting as much water as you are.

Here are some tips on how to save a lot of water in your home from here on out.

Turn Off the Water When Brushing Your Teeth

Are you someone who is still in the habit of letting the water run while you’re brushing your teeth for a couple of minutes in the morning and at night? If so, this is going to be one of the top ways you’re wasting water in your home.

Start turning the water off every time you brush your teeth to save a lot of water. You might be surprised to see just how much water you can stop from going down to the tubes when you take this approach to conserve it.

    Take Shorter Showers

Do you spend half an hour in the shower every time you climb into it? Even if you have a low-flow showerhead, this is still going to result in you wasting your fair share of water.

Taking showers that are this long can also wreak havoc on your skin in some cases by drying it out, especially if you take very hot showers. It’s another reason why you should work to stop taking such long showers if you can. Showers shouldn’t last for any longer than 10 minutes or so, and even that will be pushing it.

    Fix Plumbing Leaks

Have you noticed that some of your plumbing fixtures are leaking? Maybe you have a dripping faucet leak, or maybe you have a plumbing pipe that has sprung a leak.

Either way, you should make it your mission to fix any plumbing leaks in your home ASAP. Even small leaks can turn into big problems and waste a ton of water if you aren’t careful. You’ll be able to save a lot of water by having them fixed.

How to Save a Lot of Energy in Your Home

As you’ve seen, you can save a lot of water in your home with next to no effort on your part. Even if you only do the three things we just mentioned, you should notice your home using a lot less water than it used to.

The same can be said for energy conservation. You don’t have to overextend yourself too much to get great results. Here are some simple ways to save a lot of energy in your home.

    Invest in LED Lighting

“Turn off lights when you’re not using them” has always been the go-to method of saving energy in homes. You should still try to do this, but you should also take things a step further by investing in LED lighting for your home.

LED lights will use just a fraction of the energy that old incandescent ones will. So even if you happen to leave them all on, they’re still not going to use anywhere close to as much energy as incandescent ones do.

    Buy Energy-Efficient Appliances

If you have a bunch of older appliances in your home, there is a pretty good chance they aren’t going to be all that energy efficient. Older refrigerators, clothes dryers, and other appliances can waste a ton of energy in your home.

With this in mind, it would be well worth buying energy-efficient appliances to replace your old ones. They’ll help you scale back on how much energy you’re burning through in your house each day.

    Purchase Solar Panels

Solar panels are starting to end up on the roofs of more and more American homes. If you haven’t thought about investing in them just yet, now would be the ideal time to change that.

When you have solar panels installed, you’ll be able to harness the power of the sun to keep everything in your home powered up. It’ll reduce the amount of energy your home uses every day and bring your electric bills back down to earth.

This solar panel company can provide you with some of the best solar panels Palm Springs has ever seen.

Cut Down on the Amount of Water and Energy You Use

No matter how eco-friendly a home might be, there is always room for improvement when it comes to trying to save a lot of water and energy. You should strive to make going green a top priority within your home.

Use some of the tips listed here to begin saving water and energy each and every day. It’ll help you do your part to protect the planet.
