“Medusa Deluxe” the new dark comedy from A24 released a new trailer full of surprises. This is writer and director Thomas Hardiman‘s first feature film. Hardiman has worked on many shorts dating back to 2012.

The British whodunnit is set backstage at a hairdressing competition. The diverse casts stars Anita-Joy Uwajeh, Darrell D’Silva, Luke Pasqualino (“Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome,” “Shadow and Bone“), Kae Alexander, and more. The trailer gives off a gritty, yet funky feel as the hairdressers try to find out who is the killer hoping to rig the competition. The different hair designs seen in the trailer alone show the dedication needed to survive in that cutthroat world.

A24’s story synopsis describes the movie as “A murder mystery set in a competitive hairdressing contest. Extravagance and excess collide, as the death of a contestant sows seeds of division in a community whose passion for hair verges on obsession.”

A24 movies are normally critically acclaimed, with “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “The Whale” earning top awards at this year’s Oscars.

While the premise for this movie may not be something I’d normally watch, the trailer has made me curious. The setting of a hairdressing competition is not one I would associate with murder. Snappy catfights, maybe a few threats, but definitely not murder. After watching the trailer a few times, I want answers and am going to watch the movie to get them.

“Medusa Deluxe” is set to hit theaters August 11th.
