The fine folks at Merriam-Webster are clearly losing their sight, possibly their minds. But we can assure you- it’s fine. The famed dictionary publishers posted a chart showing their website’s Top 10 Lookups ‘Right Now.’ The results create the opening line to Papa Roach’s 2000 nu-metal anthem, “Last Resort.”
The nearly 200-year-old company shared the graphic with the text “We’re not even mad; this is amazing.” While the internet has come together to do some amazing things like naming a humpback whale Mr. Splashypants or naming a research ship Boaty McBoatface. Some commenters were quick to call shenanigans.
Namely by questioning the fact that the word “my” appears twice on the chart. Merriam-Webster responded, “We noticed this too. Must be both the adjective and the abbreviation?” We don’t doubt that the internet could spam search results until something like this happened. But this is clearly just the company engaging in some good old-fashioned shitposting. It is certainly more creative than the classic Rick Roll.
Some questioned if this may be the work of a hacker taking over Merriam-Webster’s social media. But since the same thing was posted across platforms like Facebook and Twitter, odds are that isn’t the case. Others seemed upset by the company engaging in internet culture, and we are sure they are fun at parties. But most of the commentors fired back with their own memes and jokes. Comedy truly is the great leveler.
Merriam-Webster has yet to respond to media inquiries about the post. Probably too busy cutting their lives up into pieces.
For those of you the need a nu-metal fix. You can catch Papa Roach on their upcoming fall US tour with Shinedown and Spiritbox. Tickets are available here.
