When Can We Expect to See Season 2 of The Last Of Us?

The Last of Us television adaption of the best-selling video game of the same name has left millions of viewers begging for more. It took only two episodes before HBO put pen to paper and ordered a second season of the survival drama, but when can we expect to see season two, and what can we expect to unfold on our screens?

Anyone who threw themselves into the PlayStation classic The Last of Us was excited and apprehensive when HBO announced there was a television series in the pipeline. Video games tend not to transfer well to movies and TV shows, and The Last of Us is such an incredible game that most fans were worried that the show would not do the game justice.

How wrong they were because The Last of Us show is up there with the best television ever made, a true masterpiece that follows the game’s original story, paying homage to characters along the way. Pedro Pascal‘s portrayal of Joel was immense, while Bella Ramsey is one of the favorites to win end-of-year awards with the best online betting websites for her immaculate performance in the role of Ellie.

When Is Season 2 of The Last of Us Due?

First, season two of The Last of Us has no definite release date yet. However, Bella Ramsey recently appeared on the British talk show The Jonathan Ross Show, where she said, “I think we’ll probably shoot at the end of this year, beginning of next. So it’ll probably be the end of 2024, early 2025.”

According to the various interviews with production staff over the past few months, the general consensus is that it took approximately 200 days to shoot the first season, then several months to edit and piece together the footage and add the special effects. In total, it took circa 18 months from the first scene’s shooting to the HBO premiere on January 15, 2023. If Ramsey’s prediction runs true, it could be 2026 or even early 2027 before The Last of Us season two graces us with its presence.

What Will the Plot Be for The Last of Us Season Two?

Again, like the release date, the second season’s plot is under wraps, but we can make some fair assumptions based on season one. The first season followed the first game almost to the letter, with only a handful of diversions along the way. For example, we witnessed the love story between Ellie and Riley, and Ellie frantically trying to gather medical supplies for the badly injured Joel. Both those storylines were lifted straight out of The Last of Us: Left Behind, the downloadable expansion content (DLC) of the original game. It makes perfect sense that the show’s second season will follow the path of the video game’s sequel.

Naughty Dog, the game’s developers and who play a significant role in the TV show, have publicly stated that they believe following the second game would require two seasons instead of one because of the difference in size and the sheer amount of storytelling that goes on in it. Naughty Dog has also said it does not want to find itself in a situation where the show overtakes the game or in a position where it is producing content for the show that is not in the games. Therefore, we should expect the show’s second season to almost mirror what occurs in the second game. That’s good news for fans of Pascal and Ramsey because both will return. We should also see Joel’s brother Tommy and several new characters yet to be cast.

While waiting until 2026 or even 2027 is not ideal, fans would much rather have the same incredible production of the first season than a half-baked, rushed sequel. If only we had a time machine!
