Ryan Reynolds Developing “Boy Band” Comedy for Paramount

Fun fact: did you know that the guy from the Mint Mobile commercials is actually an actor who does movies as well? Yup, that’s right, Ryan Reynolds is not just a UK football club co-owner who appears in more of his own commercials than Dave Thomas did for Wendy’s, he’s also a big name Hollywood person. The former “Two Guys, a Girl, and a Pizza Place” star (and current Deadpool) has a number of projects he’s juggling, but this latest one will have him singing a different tune; literally.

Ryan Reynolds in “Free Guy” – Hulu

Reynolds is currently developing “Boy Band” for Paramount. While details are scarce, it seems to be a movie about the reuniting of a late 90s, early 2000s boy band. You know, like “Girls5eva,” but with dudes. Reynolds is co-writing the project with Jesse Andrews, and will also be starring and producing. Shawn Levy, who previously worked with Reynolds on “Free Guy” and is serving as the director for “Deadpool 3,” will also executive produce. (Levy is not confirmed as director for “Boy Band,” but it’s not hard to see that coming to fruition should scheduling permit.)

There’s ample comedy to be had in riffing on pop music, and especially the boy band fad that brought us 98 Degrees, NSYNC, and the Backstreet Boys among others. Remember O-Town? How about soulDecision? Yeah, didn’t think so.

The film is still a way off- which is not surprising considering how many things Reynolds is working on. After all, those Mint Mobile commercials must take something like, months to create. Filming for the project is tentatively slated for sometime near the end of 2023 to early 2024.

In the meantime, if you want to hear Ryan Reynolds singing he starred in the 2022 Christmas musical, “Spirited.” But, if you really want to hear him sing in a more surreal fashion, you can watch him on the South Korean version of “The Masked Singer.” He was the unicorn. Because of course he was.
