Everything We Know About the “Hellboy” Reboot, “The Crooked Man”

Millennium Media President Jeffrey Greenstein recently revealed plans for Millennium Films’ upcoming “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” at the European Film Market. Perhaps the most exciting part? “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola will be penning the script for the film! After 2019’s “Hellboy” starring David Harbour, there is hope this reboot will revive the franchise.

    Ron Perlman, “Hellboy”

The project features a talented team of producers, including Dark Horse Entertainment’s Mike Richardson, and Millennium Media’s Jonathan Yunger, Les Weldon, Rob Van Norden, and Yariv Lerner. Executive producers include “Hellboy” creator Mike Mignola, Millennium Media’s Avi Lerner, Trevor Short, Boaz Davidson, and Tanner Mobley, and Campbell Grobman Films’ Lati Grobman and Christa Campbell. Sam Schulte will co-produce on behalf of Millennium Media.

Brian Taylor (“Crank,” SYFY’s series “Happy!“) is directing the project. He most recently wrote and directed “Mom and Dad,” which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. Additionally, he adapted Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel “Outcast” into a film for Skybound and Universal.

    Reboot Plot Details

“‘Hellboy: The Crooked Man‘ is a departure from all previous Hellboy films. [Mike] Mignola to finally shepherd authentic comic book characters/stories to film,” Greenstein said. “This is the first in the series of films that will captivate audiences in familiar (and new) ways. Brian Taylor is the perfect director to bring this original Hellboy story to life and captivate audiences.”

“I pitched an R-rated folk horror movie, and the team here at Millennium have been nothing but supportive,” Taylor said of the project. “It’s a great group of people, and they love horror.”

Filming starts next month in Bulgaria, along with “late-stage discussions with cast members.” (Which means the main cast probably isn’t set yet.) The film’s plot will revolve around Hellboy and a rookie Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (BPRD) agent stranded in 1950s rural Appalachia. They will discover a small community haunted by witches. The witches’ leader is The Crooked Man, a local devil with a troubling connection to Hellboy’s past. The story will expand Hellboy’s world through one of the most beloved issues of the comic series, written by Mignola and his Dark Horse comics collaborator, Chris Golden.

    Who is The Crooked Man?

The Crooked Man, Dark Horse Comics

The Crooked Man character first appeared in the Hellboy comics in July 2008, to coincide with the release of Guillermo del Toro‘s “Hellboy II: The Golden Army.” This reboot marks the first time Mignola has penned the script for a “Hellboy” film, and fans are excited to see how his vision will be translated to the big screen. Millennium Media is hoping “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” will spawn a successful new series of movies, and they are counting on Taylor’s vision to bring the story to life.

“Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is poised to become a highly anticipated release. Fans of the franchise will be eager to see what surprises the film has in store for them. The next comic-based project coming from Millennium Media is a live-action “Red Sonja.”
