Filmmaker Demián Rugna is back with a new horror movie, “When Evil Lurks” (“Cuando Acecha La Maldad”). This film will be produced under the Argentina base La Puerta Roja and the horror streaming service Shudder.  La Puerta Roja is a joint venture between Roxana Ramos’ Aramos Cine (“The Silent Party”) and Fernando Díaz’s Machaco Films (“Terrified”).  Shudder is an AMC-owned platform, and this will be it’s first Spanish-language original.

“When Evil Lurks” is described as a rural possession thriller. It tells the story of two brothers that find a mutilated corpse near their property and convene with the locals to suss it out. They learn that the odd happenings in their village are the cause of a spirit that’s found its way into a local man waiting for the proper protocols to rid his body of the festering demon. An escape attempt ensues as the film keeps its protagonists on-edge, racing against imminent danger to shake the spirit’s relentless clutches.

“It was a very difficult production to make but we were convinced of the script we had and of the realization of Demián Rugna,” Ramos said in an interview. “We’re very happy with the film!”  An effort that clearly shines through since “When Evil Lurks” has already earned the runner-up prize at Sitges Pitchbox in 2021. It has also snagged the 2022 Blood Window Screening Award at Ventana Sur.

“When Evil Lurks” currently has no set release date but it is expected to wrap up sometime in 2023. Stay tuned to Nerdbot for updates on this and other news.
