Djimon Hounsou (“Shazam!,” “Captain Marvel“) and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell-Horner have joined the cast of Neill Blomkamp‘s upcoming film, “Gran Turismo.” The film is a joint venture between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions to adapt the best-selling racing video game.

Hounsou and Halliwell-Horner will star alongside David Harbour (“Violent Night”), Orlando Bloom (“The Prince”), Daniel Puig (“Naomi”), and Josha Stradowski (“The Wheel of Time”). Thomas Kretschman, Archie Madekwe (“See”), and Darren Barnett (“Never Have I Ever”) will also star.

“Gran Turismo” is currently shooting in Hungary. It is directed by Neill Blomkamp (“Elysium”) and scripted by Jason Hall (“American Sniper”) and Zach Baylin (“King Richard”). It is even based on a true story. The plot is described as the ultimate wish fulfillment tale. It tells the story of a teenage “Gran Turismo” player (Madekwe) whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver.
Harbour will portray a retired driver who teaches Madekwe’s character how to drive. Hounsou and Halliwell-Horner will be playing the teenager’s parents. While Puig is cast as his brother. Stradowski’s character is a rival driver and Kretschmann will play his father.

Doug Belgrad, Dana Brunetti, and PlayStation Production’s Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan are producing. Jason Hall and “Gran Turismo” game creator Kazunori Yamauchi are executive producing.
“Gran Turismo” is currently slated to hit theaters August 11th, 2023. Stay tuned to Nerdbot for updates on this project as they develop.
