We never thought we’d be looking at a world with nearly as many Harley Quinn performers as Batman. Ok sure, once you add in the animated series(es) and films, that number of Caped Crusaders pretty much doubles. But seriously! Harley has finally gotten her rightful celebration.

While Margot Robbie wasn’t the first actress to bring the DC Comics character to live action (that honor technically lies with Mia Sara in “Birds of Prey“), she has been the most successful, critically. So, imagine our interest in her opinion when Lady Gaga was announced as playing the character in the upcoming “Joker” film sequel.

Gaga will play Quinn in Todd Phillips‘ “Joker: Folie a Deux,” alongside Joaquin Phoenix, who took home the Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the first film. Her casting was rumored for sometime this year, but officially confirmed by the production in August.

Robbie has since offered her thoughts on the casting, and it’s pretty positive. “It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, the way like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” Robbie said to MTV News. “It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

We have to agree. We think Gaga is an inspired choice, especially if the main fan theories turn out to be correct. Mainly, the hope is we’ll see Dr. Harleen Quinzel’s fall from respected psychiatrist at Arkham Asylum to unparalleled criminal henchwench and scourge of Gotham.
“Joker: Folie a Deux” is due to hit theaters October 4th, 2024. We’ll let you know what else we hear about this and other news.
