Danny Trejo Celebrates Son’s 8th Year of Sobriety

Struggles with addiction are a very serious thing. For many parents, having their children experience it is one of their worst fears. When controlled substances come into the picture, it’s oftentimes too late for intervention. But sometimes, you get to celebrate moments like this one that Danny Trejo and his son Gilbert Trejo shared.

Danny wanted to celebrate Gilbert’s 8th year of sobriety, and was smiling from ear to ear as a proud papa should.

“My son Gilbert Trejo has 8 years clean and sober today! I love you so much, and I’m so proud of the man you’ve become,” Trejo said. “Any parents out there with children struggling with addiction, I didn’t think my son was going to make it and today he’s my best friend! There is hope!”

This year will mark Danny Trejo’s 54th year of becoming clean and sober. He’s truly an inspiration for those who are struggling, and for those who are in recovery. Trejo began smoking marijuana at 8 years old, and started using heroin in his teens, due to an uncle who introduced him to that world. Trejo eventually served jail time, after trying and failing with various 12 step systems. 54 years is incredible. Trejo believes success in sobriety it is all based on your support system.

Trejo sharing such a private moment as his son’s sobriety may not seem like a big deal to some. To me, it shows a great dad who was able to relate to his son, and become his support system. Someone who’s able to lift him up and talk about the hard things some families avoid.

It just reaffirms he’s a genuinely good guy.
