Nerdbot Movie Reviews : Avengers Infinity War (Spoiler Free)

Years upon years of story telling, character development and new villains has brought us to this point. 10 years in the making, Avengers : Infinity War has arrived.

This movie is a roller-coaster of emotions, character dynamics upon meeting for the first time, and desperation. Was it a perfect movie? As a stand alone movie, it was close, as comic fan, not necessarily. I’ll breakdown my high points and my low points about this movie and what it means as an iteration in the MCU.

The Russo brothers directed Avengers : Infinity War, and for the most part understand the scale and grandeur that this story should have. It’s a very fun and exciting movie if you view it specifically as what it is. An action movie, with a bunch, and i mean a bunch of superheroes, with events that happen which I wont get into, because spoilers are bad. If it seems like i’m being vague, I am, because there’s so much to talk about that I can’t talk about. So being so, this is more of a synopsis / recommendation than a full on review.

Let’s first talk about my low-points. Now when I say low-points I don’t mean that in a bad way. Understand in its 2h 29min run time, there’s a lot to discuss, and stories to flush out. So at times, it feels a bit uneven. You have to consider that over the years, there have been multiple writers and directors for each individual movie, so to bring all these characters together under a few writers and directors makes the characters do things that you might not be accustomed to.

The first half of the film does feel a bit clunky at times, and felt like a bumpy start but gains traction fast as the movie progresses. The emotions start very high, right from the beginning, so balancing takes time and some some scenes are on different levels of emotion that, again feels like you’re trying to keep up with what’s going on, but in a good way. What I mean by that is, you’re invested the whole way, there’s no lack of intrigue as you’re trying to comprehend every detail of what’s happening.

Marvel has had some criticism about their villains in the past, but as soon as Thanos (Josh Brolin) shows up it feels like nobody is really safe, which you don’t get in past Marvel movies. He’s done incredibly as the CGI is spot on. You get a sense of dread every time he’s on screen. His presence is very intimidating but at the same time, you understand what he’s about and his motivations for why he’s doing it. This is a Thanos movie, it’s not an Avengers movie. We already know the stories of the Avengers from past movies, this is the introduction to the greatest threat anyone has seen, rightfully so, Thanos receives the spotlight.

There’s alot of humor in the movie, as you would imagine so with characters like Starlord, Iron Man, Drax, etc. etc. It doesn’t feel over-bearing, like some other Marvel movies, it’s well placed and much anticipated, because when you put Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and Starlord (Chris Pratt) together, what do you think is going to happen? The Russo Bros. breakup the heroes into teams, and they do it beautifully to create humorous character dynamics that work amazingly well.

This is a film of desperation, back-peddling, scrounging, trying to figure out, if anything, what they can do to find a way to over-come odds not in their favor. From the first minute the movie opens, to the end credits its fast paced with action, humor, emotion and fandom. This film was a gamble by Marvel Studios, and it appears to have payed off big time. Is this a perfect movie, no, but it’s as close as they have gotten to it. Overall, this is a great movie, very enjoyable and re-watchable several times to fully absorb everything that happens. I recommend this movie at the highest level possible. You don’t need to be a super-fan to enjoy this movie, it’s fantastic and well worth the wait.

    I’m rating this movie a 9/10
