Donkey Kong Smashes Through 3D Adventure in July Release

Among the major nintendo switch news unveiled at the recent Nintendo Direct, Donkey Kong is set to return in a groundbreaking 3D adventure. Donkey Kong Bananza, announced as a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, will launch on July 17, 2025, just six weeks after the new console’s debut. This marks DK’s first fully 3D adventure since Donkey Kong 64, shifting away from the side-scrolling format that has dominated recent entries.

Underground World of Ingot Isle Promises New Platforming Challenges

Bananza transports players to a vast underground setting called Ingot Isle, where exploration happens primarily through destruction. Players will “explore a vast underground world—by smashing your way through it!” as showcased in Nintendo’s trailer. The game introduces several innovative mechanics:

    • Scaling walls similar to Link’s climbing in Breath of the Wild
    • Picking up and throwing rocks to demolish obstacles and enemies
    • Digging into the ground with powerful punches
    • Tearing off chunks of terrain to swing around and throw

Essentially, the more players demolish with DK’s powerful punches, the more areas open up for discovery. The gameplay effectively combines platforming with destruction-based progression, creating an environment where exploration occurs through demolition.

Meanwhile, Bananza doesn’t abandon series traditions entirely. The game incorporates mine cart rides and classic 2D side-scrolling sections reminiscent of Donkey Kong Country games. This approach balances innovation with nostalgia, offering both fresh gameplay and recognizable elements for longtime fans.

Movie-Inspired Design Brings Fresh Look to Classic Character

Perhaps the most visually striking aspect of Bananza is Donkey Kong’s redesigned appearance. The character sports a fresh look clearly inspired by his depiction in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This represents the first significant design change since DK became a 3D model in the original Donkey Kong Country game.

The updated design features subtle but noticeable differences from previous games, including a softer, less angular brow, more oval-shaped eyes positioned closer together, and an overall slightly more realistic appearance. This shift aligns with Shigeru Miyamoto’s comments regarding the movie version, where he noted they “seized the opportunity to give him a comical personality and design reminiscent of the original character”.

Furthermore, this redesign appears to be part of a broader strategy. Between DK’s prominent role in the Mario movie, the recently opened Donkey Kong theme park, and now this dedicated game, Nintendo seems to be elevating the character’s prominence in their portfolio. The timing suggests a calculated effort to position Donkey Kong as a major franchise for the Switch 2 era.
