Skin is one of the most crucial organs for defense mechanisms. It is a physical barrier to environmental agents that may harm your body. However, your skin may undergo different signs of inflammation due to certain autoimmune conditions like Eczema.

Atopic dermatitis or Eczema is an inflammatory condition affecting different areas of your body. It can lead to excessive dryness, flaky skin, redness, and irritation. Moreover, the condition may begin in early childhood but manifest as you reach adulthood.

Here’s everything you need to know about Eczema, its symptoms, and ways to control it.

    What Is Eczema?

Skin inflammation, like Eczema, is an autoimmune disorder that affects the quality and texture of your skin. It often causes your skin to become excessively dry, flaky, inflamed, and irritated. Also, the condition may occur due to exposure to certain risk factors, like smoking, pollutants, mental stress, or peculiar fragrances.

Eczema can weaken the skin barrier and hinder defensive functions in the long run. Hence, it can predispose you to frequent infections and a dehydrated state of skin. You may consider a reliable Eczema treatment in Singapore to eliminate skin rashes and dryness in the long run.

    How Does Eczema Occur?

There are multiple theories and assumptions related to the possible causes of Eczema. However, researchers believe that Eczema occurs due to an overactive immune system. Upon exposure to external irritants, your immune system may overreact and initiate the various signs of inflammation.

Also, experts reveal that most people experiencing Eczema lack the filaggrin protein in their body. This protein is responsible for maintaining adequate moisture and hydration in your body. Long-term deficiency of this protein can result in extreme dryness and poor skin texture.

    Types Of Eczema

Eczematous conditions can be of different types, depending upon the type of rash and its intensity. It can be of several types, like atopic dermatitis, which involves dry, itchy skin that turns red due to inflammation.

Another type, i.e., contact dermatitis, occurs due to exposure to external stimuli that initiate an allergic reaction in your body.

Dyshidrotic Eczema affects the palms and soles of your body and arises due to the hyperperspiration process. Other eczema types, like nummular Eczema, cause round, red, and irritated skin patches that affect the lower extremities.

    Symptoms Of Eczema

Most eczematous conditions manifest in common conditions like skin dryness, inflammation, and rough or flaky skin patches. The condition mostly involves the back of the knees, arms, inner elbows, and scalp.

Also, Eczema can manifest as brown to reddish skin patches and bumps. If the rash contains yellowish fluid or pus-like material, it indicates an acute infective rash. Some people also experience thickened and sore skin, which feels raw and irritated.

Such signs and symptoms can affect your quality of life and disrupt skin health to a great extent.

    Eczema Treatment Options

While there are multiple treatment options for Eczema, you need to find the one that suits your body.

    1. Corticosteroids

One of the most common treatment options for managing Eczema is corticosteroid preparations. Your doctor may prescribe a cream, gel, or lotion containing corticosteroids. The preparation is also an anti-itch and anti-inflammatory aid for your eczematous skin.

    2. PDE4 Inhibitor

Another treatment option that may prove effective is the PDE4 inhibitor of Phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE-4) inhibitors. It acts on the receptors and can block the activation of cyclic adenosine monophosphate. As a result, the drug can soothe inflammation and prevent eczema flare-ups.

    3. Barrier Repair Moisturizers

Almost every eczematous condition leads to excessive dryness and lack of moisture in your skin. Hence, trying effective emollients and moisturizers is crucial to hydrate your skin. The moisturizer may help repair the skin barrier and uplift your skin texture in the long run.

    4. Calcineurin Inhibitors

Treatment options containing calcineurin inhibitors are yet another effective option to try. It works by alleviating the inflammation and irritation of your skin. Also, they help slow down the overactive immune system. The drugs help reduce the activation of inflammatory cytokines responsible for initiating inflammation.

    Lifestyle Changes To Manage Eczema

You might want to try lifestyle measures if you’re seeking reliable ways to manage Eczema. While the treatment options are quite effective, preventing flare-ups and relapses is equally important.

Hence, certain lifestyle changes go a long way in managing Eczema and its relapses. You can try stress-reduction techniques like deep-breathing exercises, yoga asanas, and meditation. Also, getting a restful sleep and practicing adequate sleep hygiene may help counter stress levels.

Such changes can reduce the occurrence of Eczema and promote your skin health.

    Final Verdict

Did you know that your skin has many defensive and protective roles to play? Skin is a primary barrier to external pathogens and can prevent infectious conditions. However, autoimmune conditions like Eczema may hinder the skin barrier and affect your defense mechanisms.

Eczema predisposes you to dry, flaky, inflamed skin, which feels raw and sore. Also, you may develop a recurrent skin rash or patch in various areas of your body. While there are many treatment options to manage Eczema, you can try out the ones recommended by your doctor. Additionally, seek lifestyle measures that help counter stress and improve your overall well-being.
