3 Game Genres that Steal Casual Gamers’ Hearts

In the diverse gaming world, people embark on adventures across various genres for different reasons. Some play to be entertained, while for others, it is a professional job. However, research by Ipsos found that two-thirds of 4000 Americans surveyed on their gaming habits played games casually.

Globally, this data translates to 1.95 billion casual gamers, representing 63% of all gamers by gaming preference. So, in this article, we set out to explore the distinct game categories that casual gamers find appealing.

    Puzzle games

Puzzle games are simple problem-solving games that test an individual’s ability to recognize patterns, complete a sequence, or understand the logic behind a process. This genre has different subcategories, including action puzzles, word games, match-three puzzles, mahjong/solitaire games, hidden objects, and coloring games. For over 30 years, puzzle games have remained popular amongst casual gamers globally. From the days of Microsoft Minesweeper, which was part of Windows 3.1 in 1992, to the release of one of the first match-3 games in 2001, turning that game genre into an international sensation.

According to data from the Business of Apps, puzzle games had 4.5 billion downloads in 2022, generating a total revenue of $9.1 billion. During this time, the most dominant games in that subcategory recorded billions of dollars in revenue. Puzzle games appeal to a broader audience of players who view gaming as a casual form of entertainment rather than a core aspect of their identity but who also like to seek a challenge.

    Online casino games

Online casino games require players to place a wager on the outcome of an event. This game genre combines elements of logic and luck to create entertainment. The major categories of online casino games include slots, poker, blackjack, bingo, roulette, baccarat, and many others. A report from Data.ai showed that online casino games recorded a 48% year-over-year growth in mobile downloads globally. Seeing that mobile is the most used device for casual gaming, this may imply that online casino games are winning the hearts of casual gamers.

Online casino games suit casual gamers because of the variety, the potential rewards, and the themed elements that are a major part of the game’s design. For instance, a 5×3 slot with 20 total paylines like Rainbow Riches uses elements like golden coins, leprechauns, and rainbows to make the game more appealing to the demographic of people who play games for fun. In Rainbow Riches, players are required to trigger one of the three bonus features for a chance to unlock prizes. This type of straightforward but unpredictable gameplay, accompanied by the simple user interface of this game, is part of why a lot of casual gamers might like it.

    Action games

Action games involve physical challenges that require a lot of reflexive reaction time and hand-eye coordination. Under this game category are sub-genres like endless runner games, beat ’em ups, fighting games, racing games, shooter games, real-time strategy, and platform games.

According to the State of Mobile by Data.ai, action games were the third most downloaded games globally in 2022, with 7.9% YoY growth. Casual gamers love action games because they often don’t require any sophisticated rules before you can play them. These games also have easy controls and allow players to relax because of their high replay value and short gaming sessions.

A Summary of Casual Gaming Appeal

Each gaming category offers a unique experience, catering to the diverse preferences of players seeking entertainment in the digital realm. As a result, what appeals to a certain demographic of gamers may not appeal to another.
