Your Guide to the Dota 2 Workshop

User-generated content is nothing new in the world of video games, but few communities have embraced it as much as the Dota 2 collective. Many games allow players to upload tweaked costumes and weapon skins for the wider community to enjoy, but the Dota 2 Item Workshop takes things to a whole other level. As well as providing fans with a creative outlet to bring their designs to life, content creators also get the chance to earn a slice of the profits when their items go live on the Dota 2 store. Eager to learn more? Our guide breaks down the basics.

    Creating a Steam Account

Before you can start creating Dota items, you’ll need to create a Steam account. Once you’ve done this, you’ll need to install the Steam client to your device. Next, you’ll need to install Dota 2 Workshop tools from the “Properties” tab. Not everyone with a Steam account is eligible to start creating and publishing items straight away. You’ll first need to make sure your account is a non-limited one. To do this, you need to spend at least $5 on Steam.

    Hero Resources and Requirements

Having a great idea for an item update is all well and good, but you need to ensure they’re compatible with a particular hero. As such, you’ll need to be ready to do your homework. The good news is that Valve makes it easy to polish up on these technical requirements. Make this page your starting point if you’re looking for comprehensive reference files and other technical insights to help you perfect those wearable items and ability models. Inside you’ll find detailed lore for every Dota 2 hero, along with guidance on models and textures.

    What Can You Submit?

Many Dota 2 fans turn their hand to wearable items first. This includes everything from character clothing to weapons. If you’re looking to make a small profit from your creations, item sets are the way to go. Creating an entire collection of wearable items takes time, but they’re far more appealing to everyday users looking to make a purchase. However, no two heroes in Dota 2 are identical. You’ll need to consider things like item effects and ambient textures before turning your ideas into a reality. Ability models and wards are other popular submissions, although you’ll need an in-depth knowledge of Dota 2 development tools to pull these off. If you’re looking for something more achievable, try creating something like a cursor pack or unique loading screen.

How to Submit Items to the Dota 2 Workshop

Once you’ve created your one-of-a-kind items, you’re ready to submit them. To do this, launch Dota 2 and look for the “Launch Dota 2 – Tools” option. Next, click on “Create New Item”. You’ll then need to select what type of item you’re publishing, add inputs like animations and meshes, and more. Once you’re done, save your Steam session and preview your item model, before carrying out any last-minute fixes and adjustments. Once you’ve successfully submitted an item, it will become available to the entire community. Want to see if any pros are sporting your creations?
