A principle of a charter school in Volusia County, Florida has resigned after getting wrapped up in a scam. A person claiming to be Elon Musk nearly got $100,000 out of the school’s account. Apparently, they were convincing enough to make Principal Jan McGee believe the scammer was the real deal.
McGee has been with Burns Science and Technology Charter in Oak Hill since it was formed. The school carries some definite prestige, boasting a waiting list and a student count of almost 1,000. McGee was held in high regard. Until now, that is.

All Not Well Behind The Scenes
According to other members of the faculty, McGee isn’t well-liked. Many indicated a toxic work environment. And at the meeting regarding the scam, three administrators spoke up. Stating that they would rather leave the school than continue to work for her. This seemed to be the clincher, and McGee resigned that evening.
McGee had long been trying to get Musk’s attention. According to sources, it was a constant topic of conversation for her. Being so close to Space Coast, she felt it only made sense for the STEM school to be in his good graces. She possibly felt she was finally successful and leaned hard into the scammer’s ruse.
It was thanks to the intervention of the school’s business manager Brent Appy that the charter didn’t end up losing a significant amount of money. “When you lose the respect of… When your leadership is now in question, you can’t properly lead and that’s going to cause chaos,” Albert Amalfitano, the school board’s chair, said.
