Bagging A Collection For Tenting Costs More Than The Treatment

The cheapest termite bid on the table is usually the most expensive job. That sounds backwards until the house in question has a converted garage room in coastal San Diego County holding 1,400 comics in long boxes, a shelf of resin statues and a rack of retro consoles wired to a CRT. A fumigation quote prices the tent and the gas. The prep is yours, which is why collectors weighing tenting against natural termite control del mar ca end up doing arithmetic nobody handed them. Priced out honestly, bagging, hauling and insuring a collection for three days under a tarp costs more than treating the infested wood in place, and that is the argument this whole breakdown is built on.

Fumigation Quotes Leave The Prep Bill Out

Read the bid again. A tenting number covers the tarp, the fumigant, the crew, the clearance check and the warranty paperwork, and then it stops. Everything that has to happen inside the house before that crew shows up sits in a column nobody totals, because the fumigator is not the person bagging your books. Job after job, the case we see most often is a homeowner who budgeted for the quote and then found out the quote was really a deposit on a weekend of labor and a stack of receipts.

A collection changes the math in a way a normal living room does not. Food, medicine and anything organic has to come out or go into fumigation-rated bags, and that standard sweeps in far more than the pantry. Sealed snacks tucked in a display case count. So do open bags of silica gel, certain adhesives and, depending on the crew, anything with a foam interior that will hold vapor.

Bagging A Long Box Wall Adds Up

A long box, which is the 300-comic cardboard coffin collectors buy by the dozen, is not a sealed container. Neither is a shelf of resin statues in printed sleeves. Fumigation-rated Nylofume bags run roughly $2 to $4 each in the sizes that swallow a long box, and a 1,400-book wall is four or five boxes plus the odd short box, so call it $150 to $300 once you buy spares for the statues. Then you spend a Saturday sealing them, which costs nothing on paper and quite a lot in practice.

Example scenario: prep cost comparison for a 1,400-book collection in a coastal San Diego County garage room, under a $1,200 prep budget

Prep Line ItemFumigation (Tenting)In-Place Wood Treatment
    Fumigation-rated bags (Nylofume)150-300$0
    Climate-controlled 10×10 storage (1 month)600-900$0
    Moving/relocation help200-400$0
    Hotel stays (2-3 nights)300-600$0

Storage And A Scheduled Items Rider Cost Real Money

Anything you refuse to leave under the tarp has to go somewhere, and coastal San Diego County storage is not cheap. A climate-controlled 10×10 unit runs $600 to $900 for the month you will actually need it, because you rent by the month whether the tent is up for two nights or three. Moving help to carry a console rack and forty boxes down a driveway adds $200 to $400 if you value your back. Your homeowners policy may or may not follow those items off the property, and the rider that covers named pieces at agreed value, what agents write up when a collection outgrows a standard contents limit, is another premium bump for a single month of coverage.

The lodging line is the one people forget until the week of. PestZero reported in May 2026 that a tented household should plan on two to three days out of the house with $500 to $1,500 in hotel and meal costs on top of the fumigation fee itself. Add the bags, the unit and the movers, and a $1,200 prep budget is gone before anybody touches the actual termite problem. That is the number a homeowner should be comparing against a natural termite control del mar ca proposal, not the headline bid.

Resin Statues And Vinyl Hate Heat Alternatives

Whole-structure heat gets pitched as the collector-friendly alternative, and it is not. Sustained temperatures in the range those jobs run will soften resin, warp vinyl records and cook the electrolytic capacitors in a 1994 console that has been fine for thirty years. Sealed game boxes cup. Foil covers lift.

So the heat option quietly recreates the same prep problem with different packaging. (I have watched a customer talk himself into heat twice and back out both times once he did the shelf-by-shelf inventory.) The tarp does not care what is on your shelves, and neither does a 130-degree room.

Treating The Wood Instead Erases Most Line Items

Drywood termites live in the wood members they are eating, which means an inspector who finds the galleries can treat those members directly instead of gassing the airspace around them. Orange oil work is drilled and injected into the infested framing, the household stays home, and the collection stays on its shelves. Every prep line item that exists only because the house has to be emptied and sealed goes to zero. No bags, no storage unit, no movers, no hotel, no scheduled-items rider for one strange month. The trade-off is honest and worth saying out loud: local treatment addresses the infestations found and reachable, so it depends on a thorough inspection in a way a fumigation does not, and a structure with hidden activity in inaccessible framing is a different conversation.

If you do end up tenting, the safety rule is not negotiable. Nobody re-enters a fumigated structure for any reason, not even for five minutes to grab one box off a shelf, until the licensed fumigator has aerated it and cleared it. Under California’s structural fumigation regulations, a certification notice for reentry must be posted by the licensed fumigator before the building is re-occupied, and that posted notice is the only signal that matters. A neighbor waving you in is not clearance.

The Cheaper Bid Is Rarely The Cheaper Job

Put both bids on one page with every line filled in, including the ones the fumigator never quoted. If the prep column on the tenting side clears $1,000 before the treatment fee, and for a real collection room it usually does, the in-place treatment has already won on price and it has not even been credited for the weekend you get back. Ask whichever company you call to walk the garage room with you and name, out loud, what has to leave. The answer to that one question tells you more about the true cost than either number on the paperwork.
