Legendary actor Robert Duvall has died. He passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones at the age of 95.

His wife, Luciana, shared a heartfelt message to his fans Monday Feb 16th

Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time. Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.

To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller. To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court. For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented. In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.

He made his first major impact as Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Then he was able to cement his legend in “The Godfather” films. His portrayal of Tom Hagen, Michael’s adviser where his calm, calculating nature became one of cinema’s most iconic supporting roles. And one of his most quotable roles came from him playing Lt. Col. Kilgore in Apocalypse Now. Giving us the famous “I love the smell of napalm in the morning.”

Duvall won the Academy Award for Best Actor for Tender Mercies (1983). Later standout roles included Gus McCrae in Lonesome Dove. Or the preacher in The Apostle (which he also wrote and directed). He also had more memorable roles in films like Open Range, Falling Down, and The Judge.

Fortunately he lived a good long life, but it always hurts a little to see someone you idolized on screen pass away. Our thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this time.
