Toho confirms a “GODZILLA MINUS ONE” direct sequel From Takashi Yamazaki. Toho has also confirmed a very large investment towards an international “Godzilla Strategy.”
As we already knew, after 2023’s “Godzilla Minus One” was an enormous success, director Takashi Yamazaki was chosen to direct a new Godzilla film for Toho. According to news from Bloomberg Japan, the eagerly awaited new entry in the series will be a direct sequel to the Academy Award-winning kaiju epic.
The first film follows Ryunosuke Kamiki(Shikishima), Sakura Ando(Sumiko Ōta), Minami Hamabe(Noriko) and Hidetaka Noshioda(Kenji Noda) as they navigate the muddied waters of what a Kaiju attack looks like in Japan. “Godzilla Minus One” followed a failed kamikaze pilot and a group of civilians trying to defend Japan from the radiation-breathing beast. The film made $116 million internationally through initial and theatrical re-releases, and took home the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.
A direct sequel also means that we may be following Shikishima and Noriko after their emotional reunion at the end of the first film, and that we may find out what that black infection is that is spreading throughout Noriko’s neck. I’m secretly hoping she becomes a Kaiju like in the anime Kaiju No. 8. But that’s me being a dweeb.
