What Should Your Child Learn – Piano or Guitar? Let’s Clear the Air!

Most parents wonder whether their children should learn piano or guitar. They know musical education is critical in their formative years and beyond. Once they pick up a skill in this, the learning can stay forever with them as a hobby or career, regardless of how they utilize it. Children who are naturally inclined toward music can soon find their passion. Others need guidance. Typically, the best time for anyone to get initiated into learning a musical instrument is between the ages of 5 and 8. During this phase, their motor skills are developed. Kids can focus more and absorb the instructions well.

In terms of the instruments, piano and guitar can be ideal for these age groups as beginners. How do you decide between one of them? Search Mandeville Piano and Guitar Lessons Map and visit the nearby music schools for guidance. You can also compare these instruments on various parameters and select.

    • Song playing

A child can learn to play a song on the guitar faster than on the piano. The strumming patterns and the positions of the chords can be easy for them to pick. Theoretically, some kids become comfortable with simple strumming methods within a few hours. The formation of the chords makes it easier to get the right notes. With piano, one has to become comfortable with the entire keyboard. Primary keys can look easy to pick, but developing a bond with them would still take time.

    • Instrument layout

The piano’s keyboard is simpler than the guitar’s chords. The black and white keys follow a pattern. You use them to play small notes or octaves. One octave contains seven white and five black notes. Higher keys fall on the right-hand side, while lower keys are seen on the left side. The guitar can look complex even with only six strings. On the fret or guitar neck, you find tiny sectioned parts. Picking a specific chord and pressing a fret creates a distinctive pitch. Playing a full song on this instrument can still be a breeze if your child learns to place their fingers at the right chords. However, the guitar’s layout may hinder their capability to decode notes that make a chord.

How should you choose between these two musical instruments? The guitar is the best way to learn a song, while the piano can strengthen your child’s foundation in the music. You can send your kid to a summer music camp, where young kids get exposure to different musical programs. They can follow those that tickle their senses and draw their attention.

Remember, the initial two or three months can be most crucial. As the child attends his music lessons, things become different. The early days of guitar playing can feel tricky because of the involvement of physical strength in playing string or pressing a fret. That’s why reputable music schools recommend these classes for eight-year-old or older kids. Their coordination will also be better at this age. As a parent, you can wait for your child to gain some experience with these instruments. Factors like comfort, knowledge, and enjoyment will show them the way as they navigate their learning journey.
