An MBA makes you an attractive candidate in the job market and can help you advance your career. Most people enroll in MBA programs after a few years in the workforce. Others decide to pursue an MBA at the start of their academic journey. If you want an MBA right after your undergraduate degree, you’ll want a degree that makes you a top candidate in your desired MBA programs. Here are undergraduate degrees that can prepare you for online MBA programs.

    Accounting

An accounting degree introduces you to business and finance concepts that can make it easier to grasp the coursework in online MBA programs. You undertake courses that teach you the principles of financial reporting, auditing, and taxation. You also learn to create and understand financial statements and gain an understanding of financial management. The strict nature of accounting teaches you to pay attention to small details. You may also learn about business law, computer-based accounting systems, and business management from your accounting program. This coursework is beneficial if you plan on enrolling in a management or finance MBA.

    Business

A business major introduces you to the foundations of business, like accounting, financial management, and human resource management. Other courses you may take in your business program include marketing, operations management, and project management. You gain insight into the operations of various business models and acquire skills in overseeing both local and international enterprises.

A business degree also helps you gain practical leadership and management skills, which most MBA recruiters look for. Your business degree program’s knowledge and skills apply to multiple industries. As a result, students with a business degree are typically well-prepared for an MBA. You can also pursue a specialized MBA that aligns with your business degree courses that interest you most.

    Science and Mathematics

A science or math degree equips you with knowledge of analytics and statistics, preparing you for technical MBA coursework. You must take at least one quantitative computing or math course during your MBA. For instance, students undertaking management or marketing MBAs may have financial analysis and statistics courses. A STEM background makes it easier to navigate your quantitative coursework as you have a foundational knowledge of mathematics. You can enroll in a STEM-related MBA, making you a desirable candidate for jobs in tech and engineering companies.

    Humanities and Social Sciences

Humanity majors include degrees in communications, history, international relations, and anthropology. MBA programs may favor humanities and social science graduates because they bring diverse perspectives and experiences into the program. For example, students with a background in communications can excel in a marketing or public relations MBA. An international relations graduate may thrive in a globally focused MBA program.

    Engineering Management

A degree in engineering management can train you in the technical aspects of product development and innovative business projects. You learn to allocate resources, manage project timelines, create technical policies, and oversee daily project operations. Your coursework also allows you to gain skills in problem-solving and leadership, preparing you for a management MBA. The technical expertise you gain in an engineering management program prepares you for an MBA in the STEM track.

Become an Attractive Candidate for Online MBA Programs

Like on-site MBA programs, online MBA admissions administrators want the most suitable candidates for their programs. Part of the criteria for admission is the student’s education. Enrolling in an undergraduate degree program related to your desired MBA increases your chances of admission. Most online MBA programs admit students with all degrees, including STEM, the humanities and social sciences, and business-related degrees. Consult the admissions departments in your desired MBA programs for recommendations on undergraduate degrees to take for successful admission.
