We are delighted to share the news that Suzanne Collins, author of the “Hunger Games” series of novels, has yet another story from Panem on the horizon. “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping” will follow everyone’s favorite alcoholic mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, during the Second Quarter Quell Games. If you’ll recall, this is the games Haymitch wins.
The book will take place 24 years before the first “Hunger Games” book, and will start on the morning of the reaping of the Fiftieth Hunger Games, per Scholastic.
“With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and, in his words, ‘the easiness with which the many are governed by the few,’” Collins said. “The story also lent itself to a deeper dive into the use of propaganda and the power of those who control the narrative. The question ‘Real or not real?’ seems more pressing to me every day.”
It already has a release date of March 18th, 2025. You can pre-order the Kindle edition from Amazon already. We’re kind of hoping the same thing happens with this as did “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” and we get a film. Now who would play a good young Woody Harreslon…
We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
Also if you’re a Haymitch fan and you HAVEN’T seen the fanfilm about his games, you should.
UPDATE
Lionsgate has confirmed a feature film adaptation of “Sunrise on the Reaping” is in the works, and already has a release date of November 20th, 2026. No word on director or casting yet.
