You might have a pro come out and do this for you. They will usually do it for free.

An audit will help you to learn where you are losing electricity. This could be from faulty seals on windows, leaky ductwork, or many other areas that you might not think about. An energy auditor knows where to look and can help you find these areas.

    1. Thermostat – Give your thermostat a nudge to reduce money spent. You could change your thermostat setting by ten degrees to reduce your costs. If you do this, you could lower your bills by ten percent.

This is especially helpful when you are away from home or when you are asleep. These are times that you won’t even notice the change in temperature. You will notice the change in your bills.

    1. Adjust Temperatures in Freezer and Refrigerator – Just as you adjusted your thermostat for your home, you might do the same for your refrigerator and freezer. Your refrigerator should be set at thirty-seven degrees and your freezer should be set at zero. You might save a lot of money by doing this.

You could reduce your costs another ten percent on bills by doing this. These temperatures will still keep your food safe. It will also help you to monitor your appliances better.

    1. Routine Maintenance – If you want your HVAC and other appliances to run effectively, make sure you do routine maintenance on them. If they are running efficiently, you reduce costs on these, as well. It will also help you to find issues that might have come up that is costing you on bills.

    1. Showerhead – You could also replace your showerhead to save some money. An efficient showerhead can use less than two gallons per minute. This can help reduce water usage by twenty-seven hundred gallons per year.

You should look for a showerhead that has a WaterSense label to make sure that you are getting one that is efficient. This is a certification from the Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA. It ensures that you are using an energy-efficient showerhead.

    1. Water Heater Temperature – You also need to lower the temperature on your hot water heater. You will lower it by twenty degrees and reduce costs between four percent and twenty-two percent each year. Most heaters are set at 140 degrees, you should lower it to 120 degrees.

This temperature can also reduce the risks of you and your family from being burned by water that is too hot. This is an even better reason than saving money. You should make sure that your family is safe and reduce costs.

    1. Energy Efficient Appliances – You could also buy appliances that are more energy efficient to save you money on electricity. Look for appliances that have an EPA label that says Energy Star. 1. Discounted Rates – Ask your provider if there are discounted rates at different times of the day. This is usually during non-peak hours before ten in the morning and after eight at night. This will help you to reduce costs by an amazing amount of money.

Some people decide to do their laundry during these hours, as well as using the dishwasher and other high energy appliances. Your provider could have a time-of-use plan for doing this. They will reduce your costs during these times.
