EarthCam, an online network of high-definition webcams from around the globe, captured a rare moment during the recent New Jersey earthquake. These webcams offer live streaming and time-lapse footage of some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, wildlife, weather conditions, and more, offering a unique perspective on our planet. This specific footage was captured by a camera affixed to what appears to be Liberty’s torch, showcasing the iconic Statue of Liberty herself.
Quite alarmingly, the footage depicts the Statue of Liberty shaking when New Jersey was hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on April 5th. While not damaging, the shaking was still strong enough to produce a visible effect on the giant copper statue. Earthquakes of this magnitude are not frequent in this part of the country, which made the recorded shaking all the more interesting to watch.
While the footage of the Statue of Liberty shaking due to the earthquake is cool to look at, it also serves as a stark reminder of the sheer power of natural forces, even in the face of human-made structures thought to be immovable. It also highlights the importance of public safety in such unpredictable situations, and while running might not always be the best solution, staying alert and informed undoubtedly is.
Personally, I would have been afraid of it falling. But then again, I’m pretty anxious as it is.
