Your guide to a secure gaming experience

In the ever-evolving landscape of online gaming, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for yourself and for others is increasingly important. Players worldwide immerse themselves in virtual worlds with friends and strangers, and as the gaming community expands, so does the need for vigilance.

This article explores essential tips to stay safe while indulging in the thrilling realm of online gaming.

    Security

One of the cardinal rules of online gaming safety is exercising caution when sharing personal information. Never share sensitive details such as full names, addresses or phone numbers. A pseudonym or a gamer tag serves as a protective shield, safeguarding your identity in the vast and interconnected world of online gaming.

You should also protect your gaming accounts with robust passwords as a fundamental step towards your online safety. Using a combination of letters, numbers and symbols enhances your password’s strength, reducing the risk of unauthorised access. You should also update passwords regularly to create an additional layer of defence against potential threats.

Keep in mind also that not all gaming platforms are created equal in terms of security measures. You should opt for reputable platforms with a track record of prioritising user safety, such as Steam. Before diving into a new gaming community, read reviews, assess security features and ensure the platform is legit. You’ll also want a secure (and fast) home internet connection – a minimum of NBN 100 from a reliable ISP is a great place to start.

Enabling two-factor authentication adds an extra level of protection to your gaming accounts. This additional step, often involving a code sent to a mobile device, acts as a failsafe against unauthorised logins. It may seem like a minor inconvenience, but the added security is well worth the effort.

And keep a sharp eye out for phishing attempts and malicious software, being wary of unsolicited messages containing links or download requests. Clicking on suspicious links may let your account be compromised or cause harmful software to be downloaded. Verify the authenticity of messages and sources to avoid potential threats.

Outdated software can leave vulnerabilities open for exploitation. Regularly updating gaming platforms, operating systems, and antivirus software is crucial for maintaining a secure gaming environment. Developers frequently release updates to patch security flaws, and staying current with these updates is an effective preventive measure.

    In-game communication

In the dynamic environment of online gaming, communication is key. However, you must be vigilant about the information you share during in-game conversations. Avoid the disclosure of personal details and steer clear of contentious topics to help maintain a positive and secure gaming atmosphere.

For younger players, parental controls are an indispensable tool. These controls enable parents to monitor and restrict their children’s online interactions. By setting age-appropriate content filters and time limits, you can help to provide a safe gaming experience for your children.

Most online games provide players with a reporting system to flag inappropriate behaviour. Familiarising oneself with these reporting tools empowers players to contribute to a safer gaming community. Reporting instances of harassment, cheating, or other violations helps maintain a positive online environment for everyone.

A united gaming community is a resilient one. Gamers can contribute to online safety by spreading awareness and sharing knowledge about potential threats. Educational initiatives within gaming communities can help foster a culture of vigilance, making it more challenging for malicious actors to exploit vulnerabilities.

If you have concerns about any interactions you have online, contact the platform or eSafety, Australia’s independent regulator of online safety.

    Watching for addiction

Gaming addictions are on the rise and it’s important to keep an eye on your own gaming habits to ensure you’re not developing a problem.

    Gaming addictions can look like:

    • Spending more and more time gaming and losing track of how long you’re doing it for.
    • Ignoring social, academic or work commitments in favour of gaming.
    • Constantly thinking about gaming, which affects concentration and daily activities.
    • Withdrawing from friends and family in the real world to prioritise online interactions.
    • Experiencing irritability, restlessness, or mood swings when play time is interrupted.
    • Neglecting physical health in favour of long gaming sessions, such as bad sleep, poor diet and lack of exercise.
    • Using gaming to escape from real-life problems or stressors.
    • Being unable to reduce gaming time or quit altogether, despite adverse effects on mental health, relationships or academic/work performance.
    • Hiding the extent and impact of gaming habits.

If you notice any of these signs in your gaming habits, you should speak to a mental health or addiction expert.

The ever-evolving world of online gaming requires a proactive approach to safety. By adopting the above practices and staying informed, you can enjoy the immersive and competitive aspects of online gaming while minimising the associated risks. Stay alert, game responsibly and contribute to a safer online gaming community for all.
