Without a doubt, two of the biggest movie franchises around at the moment are DC Film and Marvel Studios. The two superhero based organizations have invested heavily in developing movie versions of their beloved comic book series and the competition has been fierce.
While some movies have done well, others have flopped, which has left the battle between the two extremely close.
Any casino would find it difficult to pick a winner between DC and Marvel. With so much quality in both camps, it’d be like spinning a roulette wheel or playing a game of pontoon. In this guide, however, we try to determine who is edging ahead in the battle for box office supremacy.
We’ll first explore each camp in more detail before looking at their biggest titles and the fiercest clashes between the two in the box office.
Let’s jump in.
About DC Film
Owned by Warner Bros. Pictures, DC Film is tasked with bringing to the silver screen the characters of the beloved DC Comics. These famous superheroes include:
- Batman
- Superman
- Wonder Woman
- Aquaman
- Shazam!
- The Joker
- Harley Quinn
- The Flash
Over the years, DC Film has released a wide range of films which offer unique perspectives on its characters. Arguably its most standout franchise was The Dark Knight Trilogy, which focused on Batman.
Directed by Christopher Nolan, the series offered a grittier, darker look at Batman, with a far more realistic stance taken in contrast to previous editions, like the Batman played by Adam West.
DC Films also offered a unique perspective within the Batman world when it released Joker in 2019. This film focused on the development of one of the main villains in the Batman series, the Joker.
What has proven most popular for DC Films, however, are the movies that bring together a lot of these characters. In 2017, the Justice League was released, which involved DC heroes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash, and Cyborg all battling it out to defeat Steppenwolf.
About Marvel
Marvel is a business owned by the Disney organization and in the last few years has revolutionized superhero movies as we know them.
What Marvel has become well known for is its multiverse in which characters from all of its classic comics feature in its films. It’s also become well known for connecting the stories of its films together and expanding upon the wider world with each one. This has left audiences deeply immersed and involved in the franchise.
Some of its most popular superheroes include:
- Iron Man
- Captain America
- Thor
- Black Widow
- The Incredible Hulk
- Groot
- Black Panther
- Spider-Man
Marvel Studios has really hit its stride in the last few years with its movies, finding consistent success with a string of releases.
The first movie to really kick things off was Iron Man back in 2008. Robert Downey Jr, starring as Tony Stark, offered a light-hearted and humorous touch to what traditionally had been quite serious, action-packed thrillers.
Marvel continued to play upon this idea with the release of Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014. This introduced a cast of misfit heroes such as Groot, Drax and Rocket and left an indelible impression on fans.
Black Panther, starring the late Chadwick Boseman, also proved a huge success for its powerful story, brilliant acting and immersive action sequences.
And Marvel has certainly seen most success with its Avengers films, Infinity War and Endgame in particular, which brought together many of its superheroes as they strive to defeat the cosmic threat of Thanos.
Is The Battle Close Between The Two?
Although some will claim that the battle between the two studios is close, the reality is that Marvel’s movies generally earn more money at the box office.
For example, in 2021, DC Films released The Suicide Squad which earned around $167 million in the US, and Wonder Woman 1984, which earned around $166 million.
In contrast, Marvel Studios released Black Widow which earned around $378 million in the US.
But none of those compare to the money made by Marvel with the release of Avengers: Endgame. It earned a whopping $2.8 billion worldwide. Not far behind was Avengers: Infinity War, earning $2 billion worldwide. And closely following this is Spider-Man: No Way Home, which came out in 2021 and earned a massive $1.9 billion. Completing the top earners for Marvel is the first Avengers film which earned $1.5 billion.
DC Films, on the other hand, aren’t short of a good earner or two at the box office. Its highest grossing film ever, according to IMDB, is Aquaman, earning $1.148 billion gross worldwide.
In a close second is The Dark Knight Rises with $1.081 billion with Joker earning an impressive $1.074 billion. The Dark Knight, which came out in 2008, also earned $1 billion gross worldwide, making the Batman series by far the most lucrative for DC by far.
Other popular DC Films include Wonder Woman, which earned around $822 million, The Batman (2022) starring Robert Pattinson, which earned $770 million, and Suicide Squad, which earned around $746 million.
However, even the lowest film on Marvel’s top ten earner list, Captain Marvel starring Brie Larson, earned $1.1 billion.
Who’s The Winner: DC Films Or Marvel Studios?
Looking at the figures, it’s clear who the big winner is at the box office: Marvel Studios.
It’s top ten highest grossing films out-do DC Films by some margin. It’s clear that the winning series of movies for Marvel has been The Avengers, with each film earning more and more money.
However, those series can’t last forever, and it remains to be seen what direction Marvel will go next. This may give DC Films the opportunity to strike back. It has a large crop of popular characters, and if they can find a winning formula as they have done with the Batman movies, they may push back against MCU.
It all means the battle for the box office between these two superhero giants goes on.
