a submarine on route to the final resting place of the RMS Titanic in the Atlantic Ocean, has gone missing. A search is currently underway.
Lt. Jordan Hart of the U.S. Coast Guard has indicated personnel are “currently undergoing a search and rescue operation.”
The missing submersible is operated by OceanGate Expeditions, who confirmed they had lost contact. “We are exploring and mobilizing all options to bring the crew back safely. Our entire focus is on the crewmembers in the submersible and their families,” OceanGate said in a statement. “We are working toward the safe return of the crewmembers.”
There were 5 aboard the vessel. Aircraft and sonar are being deployed.
Rear Adm. John Mauger, who held a press conference Monday morning, said officials “anticipate that they’re somewhere between 70 to the full 96 hours” of oxygen at this point.
