We all knew it was a matter of time before James Cameron‘s “Avatar: The Way of Water” hit the big $1 billion mark 14 days after releasing. Several industry insiders pegged the film for this milestone at some point this week. Chances are without the huge winter storm hitting the East Coast during the Christmas holiday, this number would have happened earlier.
The still-ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has kept audiences from fully returning to theaters. It’s worth noting only 3 films hit $1 billion this year- “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Jurassic World: Dominion,” and now “The Way of Water.”
“Avatar: The Seed Bearer,” the third film in the franchise, will reportedly focus more on Jake and Neytiri’s children. The film was shot back-to-back with “The Way of Water,” to prevent the “Stranger Things” child-actors-aging-up problem from happening. Expect to see more Kate Winslet‘s character Ronal, and her now legendary 7 minute-14 second breath hold. (Which beats Tom Cruise‘s record for “Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation” at 6 minutes. “The Seed Bearer” is currently set for release on December 20th, 2024.
“Avatar: The Way of Water” is currently in theaters now.
