Ever wondered what James Bond auditions are like? An “In Conversation” event celebrating 60 years of James Bond at the British Film Institute in London shed some light on casting for Bond and his leading lady. Producer Michael G. Wilson has revealed there’s a very specific scene every actor has to perform to sell their 007 to casting directors, and it’s a surprising one. Apparently, it’s the bedroom scene from Sean Connery‘s second Bond film, “From Russia With Love.”
The scene in question sees 007 returning to his hotel room after an assassination. He readies a bath, only to be interrupted by a classic Bond femme fatale. They dance around each other with witty dialogue, which leads to seduction, popular in 60s franchise. It’s a test of an actor’s prowess at displaying cautious seduction between a 007 and the dangerous women he flirts with.
You’ve got to be the age to play the part
”That was the test we use. Anyone who can bring that scene off is right for Bond. It’s tough to do,” Wilson said. “There’s a level of experience needed that just hasn’t steeped yet in younger actors. Casting calls for the new Bond haven’t happened yet.” So, you’re not likely to see a Tom Holland-aged Bond any time soon.
“We’ve tried looking at younger people in the past…Remember, Bond’s already a veteran. He’s had some experience…He isn’t some kid out of high school,” Wilson elaborated. The need for Bond to have experience under his belt is a necessity, both for the character and the actor. Wilson explained the role works far better for with someone in their thirties.
This fun little tidbit comes just a few days before James Bond Day, October 5th. We’ll just have to wait and see who will pick up the mantle next for the dapper spy. Who do you think it’ll be? All Bond films are now available to stream on Amazon Prime.
