Host of the We're Watching What?! Podcast

Nearly nine years after retiring from the desk of “The Daily Show” Jon Stewart is set to return once more for the 2024 election season. After handing the reins to the spectacular Trevor Noah in 2015, Stewart took a break from the spotlight, and then returned to Apple TV+ with “The Problem with Jon Stewart.”  Noah announced his intention to leave the show in 2022, and Comedy Central has been “auditioning” hosts ever since. A slew of excellent guests have stepped in to host including Leslie Jones, Roy Wood Jr., Ronny Chieng, Wanda Sykes, Chelsea Handler, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn,…

Netflix has brought the elements together to debut the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” trailer. This is the best look at the new live action interpretation so far, and consider us blown away! Staring Gordon Corimer as Aang, the titular last Airbender, the trailer gives us a chance to see the cast in action.  Highlights include a shirtless Daniel Dae Kim as Fire Lord Ozai, bantering allies Sokka (Ian Ousley) and Katara (Kiwaentiio) and of course an up close look at Appa! We also got a first look at some new stills. Comparisons between the original animated series, as well as…

Marvel Studios shows that investing in authenticity and representation pays off with their new Spotlight streaming series, “Echo.” Alaqua Cox, who first appeared as the character in “Hawkeye” is stunning as the titular warrior. Joining Lauren Ridloff’s Makkari from “The Eternals” as the second deaf character on screen. Cox is also an amputee, and member of the Menominee and Mohican nations.  All of those factors end up enhancing the story and character in a way that gave a wonderful glimpse inside one of the most layered characters we’ve seen in a while. Coinciding with the news that the Netflix Marvel…

Sad that the tribulations of “Squid Game: The Challenge” have ended (for now)? Good news for those willing to travel, or who are in Los Angeles. “Squid Game: The Trials” is here to test your mettle. The competition show certainly had its own set of hurdles to overcome in adapting the drama from a murder fest to a social experiment. (We highly recommend watching the making of on Netflix for an in depth look at the detailed efforts!) Translating that translation of an experience to a smaller more accessible scale was also no easy feat. Earlier this month, we got…

Hail “The Boys” bloody return in a new teaser trailer for season 4. First revealed at CCXP in Brazil, the teaser brings us Victoria Neuman’s (Claudia Doumit) rising political stardom. An utterly divided country is on the brink of eruption (sound familiar?) about the supe situation. We highly recommend watching the “Gen V” spin-off for some additional context for the events.  We also see a glimpse of new cast members Susan Heyward as Sister Sage, and Valorie Curry as Firecracker, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan. Sister Sage can be heard convincing unbalanced terror Homelander (Antony Starr) the perks of playing hero……

When “Squid Game: The Challenge” was announced as an inevitable “real life” version of the global phenomenon “Squid Game,” we were concerned. But after watching the competition series, consider us converts! While the series doesn’t quite have the character driven emotional complexity of its fictional counterpart, it does scratch that primal competitive itch. Fans of “Survivor” and “Big Brother” will find themselves right at home here. Since actual murder of the competitors isn’t on the table, the show found ways to up the social game. As a byproduct fans of other reality competition shows will recognize that the producers have…

Disney’s “Wish” is an easter egg filled tribute to the studio’s 100 year history. Following in the footsteps of many classic Disney musicals, the film features the vocal stylings of Academy Award winner Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”) as Asha. She finds herself at odds with the ruler of Rosas, the kingdom where she resides. Reigning over Rosas is King Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine (“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves”), who has a monopoly on magic. He occasionally puts his powers to good by granting the wishes of the denizens of his domain. Though in order to do so,…

While “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes” returns us to Panem, it’s not a trip we’re sure we wanted to take. Set decades before the events of “The Hunger Games” the prequel focuses on the relationship between semi-privileged savant student Coriolanus Snow (played here by Tom Blyth and in the later films by the great Donald Sutherland) and games tribute Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler).  Though the general consensus is the film stays relatively faithful to the book of the same name, that doesn’t mean all adaptations are built the same. “The Hunger Games” greatly benefitted from…

Our favorite king of the kaiju roars back into our lives with the new Apple TV+ series, “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.” We had the opportunity to speak to showrunner and co-executive producer Chris Black, executive producer Matt Fraction, director / executive producer Matt Shakman, and VFX supervisor Sean Konrad about bringing the legend to life.  Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt Russell both play versions of Lee Shaw. Through his and his Monarch compatriots’ eyes we see the institution’s discovery of Godzilla and fellow titans. See your expectations when it comes to one of the world’s most famous behemoth. Directionally…

The film may be called “The Marvels,” but the show belongs to Iman Vellani’s Ms. Marvel. In a powerful trio of heroes, she brings a light and buoyancy to the role that is a refreshing tonal dopamine hit. She’s paired with Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel) who gives us a much more stoic performance in this. Rounding out the trio is Teyonah Parris as the grown up Monica Rambeau, who we last saw powered up in “WandaVision.” Director Nia DaCosta does an admirable (though oft uneven) job of weaving in the trio, whose powers get intertwined. She and…
