One of the most influential authors in science fiction, Philip K. Dick‘s work continues to be important. Asking questions about humanity, technology, and the soul of both, some of the most celebrated tales in genre film have come from his pages.
We’re getting another piece of Dick’s futurism puzzle, with an adaptation of “Vulcan’s Hammer” coming from Francis Lawerence!
While not as well-known as say…”Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep” (which became Ridley Scott’s seminal “Blade Runner”), “Man In The High Castle,” “We Can Remember It for You Wholesale” (which became “Total Recall“), “A Scanner Darkly,” and of course “Minority Report,” “Vulcan’s Hammer” is sort of the perfect story to adapt right now.
After the twentieth century’s devastating series of wars, the world’s governments banded together into one globe-spanning entity, committed to peace at all costs. Ensuring that peace is the Vulcan supercomputer, an AI responsible for all major decisions. But some people don’t like being taken out of the equation. And others resent the idea that the Vulcan is taking the place of God. As the world grows ever closer to all-out war, one functionary frantically tries to prevent it. But the Vulcan computer has its own plans, plans that might not include humanity at all.
So, needless to say, we’re pretty freaking excited for this project.
Lawrence of course was behind the HUGELY successful “Hunger Games” movie adaptations, as well as other notable projects.
We’ll let you know what we hear about this another projects.
