New Flu Virus with “Pandemic Potential” Found in China

According to BBC News who we trust fully there has been a new virus found in China. It’s carried by pigs and could possibly trigger another pandemic if not monitored correctly. Since it is a new strain it could be hard for humans to fight off as we have little to no immunity built up for it. They are currently monitoring the situation very carefully but since it’s so early there is no need for immediate worry.

Researchers fear that it could mutate and be carried person to person which would trigger another global outbreak. They are saying it has “all the hallmarks” of being adaptable and could affect humans.

Scientists wrote in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that measures to control the virus in pigs, and the close monitoring of swine industry workers, should be swiftly implemented.

The new flu that they have identified is similar to Swine Flu which broke out in 2009. Luckily since some older individuals had some immunity to it we were able to create a vaccine for it and it is now included in the annual flu vaccine.

This new virus called G4 EA H1N1, can grow and multiply in the cells that line the human airways.

“Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses.”

Prof Kin-Chow Chang, who works at Nottingham University in the UK, told the BBC

Like Murder Hornets, Meth Gators and other things that are now part of a very morbid 2020 apocalypse bingo we’re going to have to keep a close eye on this. Right now since everyone is distracted with COVID-19 it could be easy to lose track of what else is going on. This new flu could be dangerous but it seems that they are doing everything they can to keep it under control by monitoring people who work with swine very very closely.
