Ruby Rose on Why She Left “Batwoman” (Kinda)

We’re all still scratching our heads over the mysterious case of the lead actress who leaves her show after the season one finale. And this isn’t just any lead actress, it was Ruby Rose, and she was playing Kate Kane, aka Batwoman.

The CW’s series was a landmark in many ways- the first to feature a lead gay superhero front and center. The first to have an out gay woman in that leading role.

On paper, Rose was perfect for the part. Tough, known for playing aggressive roles across titles like “Orange Is The New Black,” the “XXX” revisit, and oddly enough to a lesser extent “John Wick,” we all had high hopes for the result.

“Batwoman is kind of like Batman,” Rose told The New York Times in an interview when she first was announced for the part. “She’s sort of no-nonsense, very stern. She’s cheeky but she doesn’t speak a ton, and when she does, she kind of does a lower voice, hiding her identity. When I do fight sequences and stunts as Batwoman, I do the Alexander Technique, where we study the bat and study the movement. Even the head movements are kind of batlike, so it feels like two different people.”

What ended up happening is that Rose, who suffered near life-threatening injuries due to a stunt gone awry at the beginning of shooting, left the show very suddenly and very publicly. Via Instagram.

Offering no real reasons, but praising the cast and crew of “Batwoman,” Rose let it be known that she would not be coming back for the show’s second season, which The CW had already ordered.

Just yesterday after much debate, Rose posted an update (kinda) and offered a most cryptic reason for her departure, saying “those who know, know.”

Thank you everyone for coming on this journey. If I mentioned everyone it would be 1000 tags.. but Thank you to the cast, crew, producers and studio. It wasn’t an easy decision but those who know, know.. I didn’t want to not acknowledge everyone involved and how big this was for TV and for our community. I have stayed silent because that’s my choice for now but know I adore you all. I’m sure next season will be amazing also. Xxx *hangs up cowl and cape.
